A continuing education class can be a great place to find community. I learned that these past six weeks while teaching a night class, “Write Your First Novel,” at the University of North Georgia. What a fantastic group of adult learners. I had an accountant, a retired minister, a missionary, a computer science expert, a former nurse, a retired prison warden, a (woman!) trucker, and more. They taught me far more than I taught them. They taught me about overcoming insecurity, about writing from the gut, about pushing yourself to improve, and about holding on to hope as an artist. And they gave their teacher a basket of apples on the last day, along with a card. I’m grateful.
